💭 Problem Solving Assessment

Problem solving refers to the process by which individuals attempt to overcome difficulties, achieve plans, or reach conclusions through the use of higher mental functions, such as reasoning and creative thinking. Problem solving tasks are one of the best predictors for future work performance.

Problem solving is a component of cognitive ability

💡 Cognitive ability is defined as a general mental capability to perform tasks associated with perception, learning, memory, understanding, awareness, reasoning, judgment, intuition, and language. Cognitive ability is also often referred to as intelligence or general mental ability.

👉 Across organizations, cultures, and centuries, individual differences in cognitive ability and personality traits have played a critical role in all behavior, especially in organizations, from the manufacturing line to the boardroom.

💭 How to measure problem solving

We measure problem solving with figural analogies which focus on inductive reasoning.

Inductive reasoning involves generating and testing hypotheses and generalization of findings from a set of predefined instances

The exercises to solve the problem solving assessment consist of two parts. In the upper part, a matrix with three shapes is presented. A fourth shape is missing, and the space that it is supposed to occupy has been filled with a question mark. In the lower part, eight options of shapes are shown, and the candidate will have to select the missing shape out of these options by clicking on it.

Throughout the exercises, the candidate will find different types of changes between the shapes of the matrix, either from left to right (thus in the rows) or top down (thus in the columns). The task is to recognize these changes and to choose, out of the given options, the one which fits in the place with the question mark.

The candidate is required to answer as many sequences as possible within 10 minutes.

❓Problem Solving Interpretation❓

➕ People with high scores on problem solving can easily achieve plans, or reach conclusions through the use of higher mental functions, such as reasoning and creative thinking

➖ People with low scores on problem solving might experience difficulties with the process by which individuals attempt to overcome challenges and with identifying, prioritizing, and selecting alternatives for a solution
